High School "Hoops Report" by Dr. EJ Brown

The high school basketball season is in full effect in the city of Albany, Georgia. The word around town is that this is the year that basketball returns to the Good Life City. Let's take a closer look into each boys basketball program.

The Monroe Tornadoes are off to an impressive start. Their record is 3-2 but they have already secured victories over Westover and Dougherty. Monroe is led by a host of seniors that are exhibiting great leadership thus far. N Harris, E Offord, T Jackson & K George are poised to lead the Tornadoes to a region championship during their last season in green & gold.

The Westover Patriots are 2-1 on the young season. The Patriots have yet to play a game in the infamous "Boston Garden". The Patriots first home game will be against the Bainbridge Bearcats on Friday, December 11, 2016. The Patriots are led by their guards. Currently, (4) guards are averaging double figures (A Williams, J Grier, J Brown & K Gardner). The Patriots will go as far as senior Allec Williams will carry them. The senior is one of the top point guards in the region.

The Dougherty Trojans are probably the deepest team in the city. Honestly, the Trojans have 15-18 players that can contribute on any given night. Currently, the Trojans are 3-3. The Trojans are led by David Quimby. The junior guard does everything for the team from the eastside. The Trojans have a huge test on Friday as they will face the Tift County Blue Devils.

The Albany High Indians are the youngest team in the city. The Indians have 7-8 freshmen on varsity. They aren't just on the roster, they are playing major minutes. Currently, the Indians are 3-3. There are also a few good upper classmen on this team. 6'6 Deandre Hamilton is a player to watch for the Indians. We anticipate the Indians to be major players in the region 1-AAAA.

As you can see, this is going to be a wild season in Albany. The U Save It Classic will be held at Albany High School on December 18-22, 2016. Albany Elite Sports will be there to cover the event.

Stay tuned!!!

The 2015-2016 Middle School Basketball Season in Albany has started off with a "bang"! As we approach the mid point, the Albany Elite Sports staff would like to recognize the top performers.

For the girls, Radium Springs is the top team as evident by their undefeated record. The team has a host of good players, but one girl has separated herself from most middle school girls in the state of Georgia. Denver Bryant (remember the name) is the mid point MVP for the girls.

Albany is a team to watch very closely. Coach Whatley always has her girls ready to play. Their only loss is to Radium. The rematch will come during the 2nd half of the season. Southside and Merry Acres have a lot of NEW players. Both teams have the ability to pull off a major upset heading into the playoffs.

On the boys side, Albany has been the team to beat. Albany is currently undefeated. Most predicted them to finish last because they graduated a ton of players from their championship team on last year. Co- MVPs are Rod Jones & Donnell Kendrick. Coach Malone deserves a lot of credit for re-establishing Albany as a middle school powerhouse a year removed from his first championship. Albany looks to make it Back to Back championships.

The boys division is WIDE open. Southside is a team to watch. They have a tough nucleus of Tramell Harris, Matthew Green, Quadre Watts & David Goodwin. Radium Springs has a rotation of 12-15 kids that can all contribute on any given night. A young Merry Acres team is primed to make a run in the 2nd half of the season. Rookies like "Tay Tay" Clyde have the potential to make the Braves a player as they fight to make it to the championship game for the 3rd straight year.

The 2016 Middle School Boys & Girls All Star Game will be held at Darton State College on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Stay tuned for more details!!!
